Breaking Down the Barriers to Augmented Reality: Prototyping in the Classroom

This hands-on workshop is for designers and educators interested in creating augmented reality experiences with motion and interaction.

When we began bringing augmented reality into our respective classrooms and personal design practices it was difficult to find tools for prototyping and publishing that weren’t reliant on programming skills, expensive platforms, and fancy hardware. And, when we actually published these experiences, we were confronted with similar barriers to entry. Today, not much has changed. It’s akin to working in the wild west of web design in the early 2000s, with the same obstacles of non-standardized workflows, tools, and design platforms.

Over the course of one hour, you will learn the basics of AR and demo potential platforms to use in your design classroom or personal practice. Using just a browser, and smartphone—no technically opaque and cost-prohibitive technology —create your own live augmented reality experience to share with colleagues, students, and other conference participants.

From technical barriers to ethical concerns, bringing augmented reality (AR) into the college classroom presents specific challenges. Students struggle with finding the right tools, and often lose sight of critical analysis when excited by the novelty of working with a shiny, new technology. As educators and designers in the creative classroom, we explore how to bring augmented reality and other emergent technologies into the public university curriculum. This past January, we shared our ideas in a four-hour workshop at the 2020 Interaction Design Education Summit at the Domus Academy (Milan, Italy). This article summarizes our approach to teaching AR and provides educators with tools to bring AR into their own classrooms.

Abstract  
In this session at the 2019 “Motion Design Education Summit” the authors will describe the pedagogical development and provide examples of “The Designumentary ,” a communication design project that has been developed and implemented since 2016. “The Designumentary” was first assigned to undergraduate graphic design sophomores at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, or “MassArt” and was later adapted at Merrimack College as well.
